SMM Stainless Steel Spot Daily Review: Weak Downstream Purchase Willingness, Cost-Driven Price Resilience. On April 2, the activity in the stainless steel spot market was lackluster, with weak downstream purchase willingness. The most-traded futures contract 2505 fluctuated at a high level, with the SS2505 quoted at 13,570 yuan/mt, up by 65 yuan/mt. In the spot market, prices for 200-series and 316L hot-rolled coils rose, while 304 remained stable. The prices for 201/2B, 316L, and 430 cold-rolled coils, as well as 316L hot-rolled coils, varied in Wuxi and Foshan. Due to cost support, the current transactions were moderate. It is expected that subsequent downstream demand will increase, coupled with cost support, stainless steel prices will remain resilient.
April 2nd, the stainless steel spot market showed weak activity today, with downstream purchasing enthusiasm remaining low. Some stainless steel prices rose due to manufacturers' price hikes and cost increases. On the futures side, the most-traded contract 2505 fluctuated at high levels. At 10:30 AM, SS2505 was quoted at 13,570 yuan/mt, up 65 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. In Wuxi, the spot premiums and discounts for 304/2B ranged between 200-500 yuan/mt. In the spot market, 200-series prices increased, 304 prices stabilized, and 316L hot-rolled coil prices rose. Supported by costs, prices edged up, but market transactions were moderate. Specifically, cold-rolled 201/2B coils in Wuxi and Foshan were both quoted at 8,350 yuan/mt; cold-rolled trimmed 304/2B coils averaged 14,050 yuan/mt in Wuxi and 13,975 yuan/mt in Foshan; cold-rolled 316L/2B coils in Wuxi were priced at 24,350 yuan/mt, while in Foshan at 24,550 yuan/mt; hot-rolled 316L/NO.1 coils were quoted at 23,700 yuan/mt in both regions; cold-rolled 430/2B coils in Wuxi and Foshan were both priced at 7,500 yuan/mt. It is expected that with the gradual release of downstream demand and strong support from the cost side, stainless steel prices are likely to remain firm. Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
